We found these delicious looking berries growing near the dumpster this afternoon. I thought they looked edible, perhaps raspberry, or blackberry, maybe a logan berry or some other exotic north American variety.
Just as well I looked up, "Poisonous Berries in New Hampshire", before eating any. I don't know what this berry is, but a number of very poisonous berries grow wild in this region.
The blueberries and strawberries are so cheap here and the punnet sizes are massive compared to home. It has been great having a few berries in my porridge in the morning or as an after dinner treat.
Blueberries are indigenous to North America and have deep roots in the country’s history. Native Americans enjoyed them year-round. They dried blueberries in the sun and added them whole to soups, stews and meat, or crushed them into a powder rubbed into meat as a preservative. They also used them (and their leaves and roots) for medicinal purposes.
Blueberries are very low in calories and are packed with vitamin C. They are one of the highest anti-oxidant value fruits and help to protect the body against cancers, aging, infections and degenerative diseases.
